I will participate. My goals are:

Get ranked on Amanda Awards
Get ranked on DIFF's The 100 Greatest Arab Films (two are Nordic co-productions)
Watch all remaining Nordic films on TSZDT

That covers 9 films (counting the second season of Riget as 4 films).

1. Arven (Anja Breien, 1979) Norway, In Competition at Cannes, no official toplists

There are 59 Norwegian movies in Toplists, but there are only 3 I haven't seen, and one of them that can't be seen outside of film cllubs. So I'm only sure that I will see Fritt Vilt, Fritt Vilt II and Louder Than Bombs (nominated for best film - Amanda, I've seen the two others) this challlenge.

1. Præsidenten /The president (Den 1919)
The "president" is the presiding (chief) judge in a smallish town.
The sins of the fathers get visited upon the children (and especially their women) unto the third generation; redemption involves going against prevailing social norms. Dreyer's debut.

It seems the official Swedish and Finnish links that changed (probably because they have become official since the last challenge).

1. För att inte tala om alla dessa kvinnor/All These Women - 4/10 Ingmar Bergman was a great genius when it came to drama. When it came to comedy… ??????
2. Kvinnodröm/Dreams - Cahiers du Cinema list - another Ingmar Bergman - lots of jewels in this movie, was kind of irrelevant, but still okay.

A comedy which I did get into as it went along. (I was glad I can sort of read Swedish, as the English subs are a bit strange and don't always fit in the frame.)

Arrgh, I copied that from the rules 2 years ago. I assume it means that you can't watch (count) the same movie twice for this challenge, whether you've seen it before or not. That should go without saying, shouldn't it? I'll fix it.

But it only counts once for the challenge. (I'd put an emo in there but us aspies don't read facial expressions very well.)

1. Det sande ansigt (Ipsen & Lauritzen, 1951). Holy jalapeño! An existentialist noir. A little bit clunky in the middle (dialog is a bit hokey at times), but the beginning and end are outstanding! Found it on Youtube, but there are no subs. It's not on any of the private trackers I know of, but there is supposedly a DVD of it somewhere (but without subs or captions, according to the info I have). A damn shame, this is really good. I am perhaps biased, but I'm surprised at how much I liked this (especially given my low opinion of Danish movies from the 1960s to early 1990s). Odd, this was 720p on Youtube. I guess someone ripped the DFI online film service?

3. Speedy Gonzales - noin 7 veljeksen poika (Finland) Cheap looking western. It's okay, but doesn't really stand out.
4. Neitoperho (Finnish) This one doesn't really rise above. It may be watchable, but not sure why it would be considered one of Finland's best films.

1. Les géants (2011) 3/10
Don't like the kids, don't like the setting, and the narrative doesn't go anywhere interesting or realistic. After about half the movie I had a whole slew of things I wanted to complain about it, by the end I just want to forget about it.

2. Pauline & Paulette (2001) 6/10
Cute old person dramedy, but the characters aren't all that interesting and their development is very sporadic.

3. Cloaca (2003) 7/10
An interesting and occasionally amusing dialogue heavy stage adaptation. The characters aren't really sympathetic to me, which undermines some of what its trying to do, but its still compelling enough to watch.

4. Toto le héros (1991) 9/10
Wonderful tale of youth and old age that uses eccentric plot devices to keep things light and amusing while it delves into the sorrow and isolation of the main character. Much like Mr. Nobody it's something that is heavily stylized and emotional and either clicks or it doesn't, thankfully it does for me.

2. Adam og Eva (Balling, 1953).Eh. Comedy about a French (erotic?) book that causes embarrassing moments for its possessor and of course the book is passed from person to person so we can get some vignettes. This may have been a little edgy in 1953, but is utterly harmless today. We do get to see some good actors and the directing is not bad (Balling would later become legendary in Denmark for his 13 "Olsen Gang" movies).

5. Antonia (1995) 5/10
Lots of comments on ICM about how this is awful/great because of the strident feminism, but I don't really get either side of it. Yeah the film has a feminist perspective, and a few scenes are over the top, but it's not like it ever develops into any actual commentary on the subject. Mostly it's used to try to provide an absurdist bent to the narrative, but I don't think it's very successful in that. So a lot of what seem like they should be amusing asides are dreary scenes that slog the film down. The other main problem is it's a wide scope film playing out a number of "important" scenes in Antonia's life, but they rarely further Antonia's characterization so by the end it all feels like a really shallow film trying to have depth. There are scenes and moments I found enjoyable or thoughtful, but there's a lot of other stuff to slog through to get to them.

6. Ober (2006) 8/10
I've enjoyed all the van Warmerdam films I've seen, but they always leave me a little distanced. This is the closest to hitting the sweet spot, and I think it's because of the meta aspects. It has the usual absurdist humour of his films, but the wrinkle adds a layer of meaning besides "modern life sucks."

7. Kleine Teun (1998) 8/10
No meta stuff here, but still a fun slice of unreality from van Warmerdam. Great performances from a small cast. I think that's part of the appeal to me, it doesn't feel stagey, but it's a dialogue heavy low key film with a lot of back and forth.

8. Harry og kammertjeneren (1961) 7/10
It's a cute film that feels very much like something that would have come out of Hollywood in the 40s. A simple premise with a twist, used for laughs but also to give the characters a bit of growth and a slight bit of social commentary.

9. Steve + Sky (2004) 7/10
Very stylish, and it really builds up the two leads well, but it's missing something for me.

3. Ingen tid til kærtegn/Be Dear to Me (Hovmand, 1957). A story that's been done both before and since, this has a certain charm because of the sincerity of the 8 year old girl playing the lead role. After a strong first hour it loses some steam during the last third, but the ending is pretty good.
